U.S. Flag Code states that it is the universal custom to display the American flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open. However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the American flag may be displayed twenty-four hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.
1. Lighting effects can vary, and are dependent on both the viewer and the positioning of light fixtures.
Using multiple lighting fixtures can enhance overall lighting effect.
2. Using multiple lighting fixtures will ensure that the flag is illuminated regardless of wind direction and viewer visibility.
3. Fixtures should be setback from the pole one-third to one-half the length of the flag. Other setbacks will produce different results as well as tilting or aiming the lighting fixtures toward the flag can also increase light levels.
4. Setbacks are also dependent on type of lighting fixture(s) and wattage.
